Madison Petaway, 16, was chosen as Houston’s 2020 Youth Poet Laureate. She’s a junior in high school with a passion for poetry. Inspired by rap music, she started writing poetry in first grade. Petaway tries to bring awareness to mental health issues. She shared in an interview, “Being a teenage person of color there’s a lot of stigma regarding mental health and I want to bring awareness to the stigma.” Petaway is happy to be the role model she never had.
