Russia’s temperature increased 5–18 degrees Celsius, depending on the region, during the past 2019–2020 winter season. Most of Moscow didn’t see any snow. So artificial snow was brought in for New Year celebrations. The permafrost is breaking down. And most of the country sits atop this permanent thick layer of frozen ground. The warming weather has created sinkholes. President Vladimir Putin is starting to acknowledge the consequences. But thinks it could be due to “processes in the universe”.
