Marla Berkowitz has been providing critical information to Ohio’s deaf community during the coronavirus pandemic. Every afternoon when Gov. Mike DeWine gives a COVID-19 briefing, Berkowitz provides American Sign Language interpretation. She is unique and has gained a following because she is deaf and the only certified deaf interpreter in Ohio. As DeWine speaks, someone signs to Berkowitz, and then she signs to the audience in an easy to understand way. Her exaggerated facial expresses are a crucial part of American Sign Language. As residents of Ohio have been watching Berkowitz daily on TV, she has gained a following of fans on Facebook.
