Good news for young children around the globe, especially those in Africa: the first approved malaria vaccine has been introduced in a pilot program in Malawi, Ghana, and Kenya. Experts will soon determine how to expand the program to protect more young children from this killer disease. The vaccine was developed by an international team of collaborators—researchers, health organizations, foundations, and governments—over the course of three decades. Its rollout was a true triumph in parts of Africa, where malaria had been claiming a young life every two minutes.
