Americans will vote to elect a new president on Nov. 8, but first they must register to vote. On National Voter Registration Day in September, social media networks played a major role in helping remind people to register. Facebook placed notifications on the top of the users’ newsfeeds. Snapchat had celebrities reminding citizens to register. Americans over the age of 18 were then directed on to the voter registration sites for their home states. These campaigns brought a huge spike in numbers as thousands of people registered. In Minnesota alone, over 47,000 people updated their registrations over the weekend.
