Scientists Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier recently made a huge scientific breakthrough — by accident. The women discovered the most powerful DNA editing tool that we know of. It’s called CRISPR/Cas-9, and it has the ability to edit any section of DNA. What is DNA? It is a molecule that determines the characteristics for a living thing, such as a human. Being able to edit DNA could allow scientists to eliminate negative characteristics, such as genetic diseases. Doudna and Charpentier weren’t setting out to make this discovery. They were merely doing simple research. The discovery is considered life changing.
