Dr. Rachel Levine is new the assistant secretary for health in the Department of Health and Human Services. The vote made history, as Levine is the first openly transgender federal official. Levine used to be the secretary of health for Pennsylvania. She led the COVID-19 response in the state last year. Colleagues say she is a “trusted voice” for opioid guidelines, health equity, and LGBTQ health care.
