10-year-old Becomes America’s Newest Chess Master

Chess prodigy Tanitoluwa Adewumi won all four of his chess matches at the Fairfield County Chess Club Championship, making him a chess master. At age 10, Tani is the 28th youngest chess master in the U.S. Tani and his family come from Nigeria. They were refugees. They moved to the U.S. in 2017 and lived in a homeless shelter. Tani’s life changed when he started playing chess. He practices every day for 10 to 11 hours. He can think up to 20 moves in advance, a handy skill for a master. In 2020, Tani wrote a book about his life. It is called “My Name is Tani – and I Believe in Miracles.” Trevor Noah, a talk-show host, wants to make it into a movie to inspire others. In two years, Tani hopes to be the world’s youngest grandmaster.
