Navy Secretary Ray Mabus thought a destroyer was a good fit to be named for Colonel Harvey C. Barnum Jr. Like Barnum, destroyers are versatile and can do many things at once. Barnum received the Marine Medal of Honor for his bravery in assuming command of his company and leading them out of danger in 1965. Barnum is just the sixth Medal of Honor winner honored with his name on a Navy ship.
