Even though minorities have more opportunities to enter scientific fields, they still make up a very small portion of degrees awarded. This is true of all sciences across the board. Of the 14,000 members of the American Meteorological Society, just 2.1 percent are African Americans. Other minority groups are even lower. Minorities face many challenges in choosing a scientific degree or career, such as overcoming stereotypes and equal access to options.
