A leatherback sea turtle was seen near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in mid-July, earlier than normal. The turtles are endangered, so it is rare to see them in the waters. They are easily caught in fishing lines and nets intended for larger fish. The turtles come to the bay to feed on jellyfish at the end of summer after traveling more than 6,000 miles (9,660 km) from their nests in Indonesia.
