How Photography Tells The Story Of Black Soldiers In The Civil War

Deborah Willis’ new book features more than 70 photos of African American soldiers who fought in the Civil War. The rare images show the soldiers in uniform. Some are black nurses or cooks. Photography was expensive during this time. Staged photos like these were important for family records and seen as status symbols. Willis’ book also includes letters and journal entries to give a sense of personality to the people in the photos.
