14-year-old Amputee Thrives In Basketball And Track

Skylar Scarnecchia felt foot pain in fourth grade. The pain turned out to be a cancerous tumor. After chemotherapy, she needed to make a decision: She could have the tumor surgically removed and lose function of her foot. Or she could have her leg amputated below the knee. Skylar chose amputation because it would allow her to continue competing in sports. After extensive physical therapy, Skylar helped her basketball team win a championship. In 2019, she started competing in track. Her goal is to make the Paralympics.
