Descending in a submersible to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench, Vescovo identified new species of shrimp-like creatures called amphipods, collected rock samples, and found plastic pollution on the seafloor. The near-freezing temperatures, extreme pressure, and darkness of the deep have made exploration difficult. This is just the third time humans have reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot under the sea.
