Free Solo: Capturing A Death-defying Climb

When Alex Honnold decided to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan without a rope or safety gear in June 2017, filmmaker and fellow elite climber Jimmy Chin (and crew) were there to capture every move. As Honnold ascended the 3,000-foot granite face, the cinematographers rappelled beside him—in silence—trying to avoid any distraction that might disturb his concentration. Some experts called the climb the most daring ever attempted. Chin called it “the project of a lifetime.” The resulting documentary, aptly named Free Solo, won an Academy Award.
