An enormous blue whale fossil found recently on the edge of an Italian lake is the largest ever uncovered. Analysis of the remains revealed that the marine giant was 85 feet long and lived about 1.5 million years ago, much earlier than scientists thought possible for whales of this size. Large whale fossils are extremely rare. The find has brought to the surface many important facts about the rise of giant whales, the largest animals on the planet.
