Each year, the Newberry Award is given to one children’s book in the United States. It is the nation’s highest award for children’s literature. This year’s winner is The Girl Who Drank the Moon. It was written by Kelly Barnhill. It tells the story of a girl with magical powers.

The Caldecott Medal is another important award. It honors the best picture book of the year. Author Javaka Steptoe won this award for his book Radiant Child. It is about the childhood of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
