Though Americans celebrate July 4 as Independence Day, founding father John Adams thought the country should celebrate independence on July 2. He believed this day was more appropriate because on this day in 1776 the Second Continental Congress passed a motion to declare independence from Britain. The Declaration of Independence, however, was signed on July 4, and that day became the federal holiday.
