There were a few surprises at the 2016 Academy Awards, but the most of the attention during the ceremony was centered on diversity — more specifically, the lack of it. For the second year in a row, none of the nominees for acting were from minorities. This caused a storm of posts using the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag on Twitter, and several performers even boycotted the awards ceremony. Host Chris Rock chose to address this issue directly, poking fun at both sides of the controversy during his monologue and throughout the evening. He and others also asked for more opportunities for members of minorities to participate in the movie-making industry.
