First Native American Poet Laureate
Joy Harjo is the first Native American to serve as Poet Laureate of the United States.

Joy Harjo will take her place as U.S. poet laureate in the fall of 2019. She is the first Native American poet to hold this position. As a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, she inevitably writes about her culture. Joy has found her voice through writing poetry. One of her duties as poet laureate is to elevate recognition and the value of poetry.
