A new music streaming service called Tidal hit the market in March. It hopes to compete with streaming giants such as Pandora, Spotify and YouTube. Rap artist Jay Z is behind Tidal. Other famous artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna and Jack White support the new service. However, many critics have already dismissed Tidal, despite it’s support from music superstars. The reason: Tidal requires users to purchase a monthly subscription. It costs either $9.99 per month or $19.99 per month, depending on the package. Both Pandora and Spotify offer free service to listeners. But many artists believe those streaming services pay too little. Jay Z’s vision for Tidal is that a larger portion of the money made from subscriptions will be put back into the music industry. This money will then better pay the artists whose music is played on the service.
