“The colorful introductory books in the Sports Report series feature 12 two-page chapters devoted to aspects of the sport discussed. While the two ‘Think about It’ boxes in each book pose open-ended questions, the main text is not aimed specifically at kids, and most of the clearly reproduced photos show adults and teens playing the sport on professional teams, in the Olympics, or in other world championships. The writing uses short sentences effectively, and the look of these books will appeal to somewhat older readers reading below grade level. Although all four books include women athletes, the male-female balance in the pictures is particularly good in Lacrosse and in Volleyball. Hockey spotlights topics such as the Stanley Cup, player nicknames, and great rinks, from the frozen ponds and backyard ice to Montreal’s Bell Centre. Lacrosse discusses the game’s American Indian roots and its growing worldwide popularity as well as the speed of both the players and the ball. Track and Field includes chapters on the ancient roots of track and field, the Paralympics, and the role of technology on record-breaking speeds and distances. Volleyball looks at the indoor sport, the beach version, and variations around the world while introducing some outstanding players. Action photos on the covers will help attract sports fans to these accessible books.”
