Social media can help people feel more connected with one another. But some people use platforms like Facebook and Twitter to drive people apart. That happened in the United Kingdom in 2017, when Twitter users were exposed to divisive messages about Islam. Officials say a “troll farm” in Russia was responsible for the tweets. They believe outside influences were trying to create discord between UK residents of different religious backgrounds.
