World War I ended on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918. Armistice Day, as the anniversary is known by, is celebrated around the world. Given the centenary, observances were bigger than usual in 2018. Heads of state across Europe attended events to commemorate the end of World War I. Crowds of Europeans also assembled on city streets, beaches, and other places to celebrate Armistice Day.
