In August 2018, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the island of Lombok in Indonesia. Many parts of the island were badly damaged. Hundreds of people died and more than a thousand were seriously injured. Tens of thousands were left homeless. To make things even worse, the quake came right in the middle of Lombok’s busiest tourist season. Thousands of foreigners were evacuated. Embassies sent out “do not travel” warnings. Lombok’s economy depends on tourism.
