The city of Yorktown, New York, is dedicating $67,500 to a Revolutionary War memorial, putting it close to its fundraising goal of $225,000. The memorial will depict members of the 1st Rhode Island regiment, who in 1781 defended the town of Yorktown Heights from the British. The 1st Rhode Island was also unique in that it is believed to be the first African-American regiment. It also contained Native American and European Americans.
