Next year, the University of California, Irvine will be launching an esports program focused on the popular game League of Legends. The program includes 10 scholarships of about $5,500 each to help attract top players. A few other schools have esports programs, but UC Irvine is the first to have a direct partnership with Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends. The school and the game company are working together to build an on-campus PC café where students can gather to play games and watch competitions. UC Irvine hopes the program will lead to connections between esports and research, both from the arts and culture perspective as well as from areas such as engineering, game development, and neuroscience.
