Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are well known for exploring the Louisiana territory, which Thomas Jefferson had just purchased. Much less known are their difficulties in understanding the many cultures they encountered on the trip. Wasco Tribe elder Pat Courtney Gold set out to change that. She gathered oral histories about the two adventurers and discovered that Lewis and Clark refused most food the American Indians offered them, even though they had resorted to eating their own dogs. And they insisted on only doing business with men, disrespecting the women who made important decisions in the tribes. These and other misunderstandings made the journey much harder than it could have been.
