An amateur photographer recently visited an Australian park and captured images of black-and-yellow beetles. He’d never seen the beetles before, so he shared the photos with scientists, asking what they were. Their answer stunned him. A beetle expert identified them as Australian ladybird beetles — a species believed to have been extinct for the past 75 years. In fact, one scientist says that the 40 beetles the photographer saw indicate that the ladybird population is thriving. Now scientists are trying to discover why the insect was found 310 miles away from its original home.
